D24

At the moment the D24 is the biggest Engine availlable from Wilesco. I got her from Frank, a member of the Mamod Forum. The Engine is big. Really BIG.

As the cylinder is the same that is in the D16 up to the D21 one may think about spending so much money more for a D24. In my opnion it is sound to spend the money if the engine is electrically heated. Using solid fuel means short time steaming and the big boiler is wasted. The boiler insulation and the big flywheel are making the engine interesting. With the insulation the boiler is more heat efficient and there more steam is produced that can be used. Combined with the bigger momentum of the bigger flywheel the Engine has more Power than her smaller sisters.

D24 on the right side a D6.

My engine "suffered" an unimpressive modification by the pre- preowner. He tried to lead away the exhaust steam to a condenser beneath the base plate and then to the chimney. That does not funktion. Also the pressure gauge is defekt. That is easy to repait. I will do that soon.

The engine is good quality and a fine steamer. You can see how much torque she has especially if steaming on low revolutions. Vibrations are totally unknown.

Esbit as fuel is simply to week to make use of her potential. An electircal heating would be preferable. I will use a meth-burner. If that is not satisfying I will get her a ceramic gas burner.

My evaluation

  • lots of Power
  • still easy to handle
  • great fun
  • good quality
  • with Esbit to week
  • very expensive

not for beginners otherwise recommendable
